HOW DO LASER SKIN TREATMENTS WORK?
Laser skin treatments in Westchester from Park Avenue Medical Spa utilize various photo-therapies, including the IPL laser, BBL laser, and the Venus Viva fractionated Laser. Each laser has unique advantages for treating your skin, but most photo-therapies share similar mechanisms. ¹
Rejuvenate Skin + Reduce the Signs of Aging
IPL (intense pulsed light,) BBL (broad band light) and the Venus Viva, which uses fractionated light, safely heats the outer layers of your skin by penetrating it with photo-thermal energy. This energy triggers skin rejuvenation by stimulating the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin.² These are the proteins responsible for keeping your skin looking young, firm, and healthy. Age and exposure to UV radiation causes existing collagen to break down. It also slows down the production of new collagen. This leads to fine lines, wrinkles and lax and sagging skin.
Reduce redness + Improve Vascular Lesions
Thermal energy can be focused to target and eliminate many of the fine vessels that cause redness, effectively treating rosacea, port wine stains, red spots (Hemangiomas,) poikiloderma and broken capillaries
Get Rid of Brown Spots + Improve Pigmented Lesions
Thermal energy is very effective at threating age spots (also known as sun spots or brown spots,) freckles, burn erythema, and other forms of hyperpigmentation. It does this by penetrating and breaking up the melanin responsible for pigmented lesions.
Diminish acne Scars + Stretch Marks
Laser Scar treatments with the Venus Viva, utilizes fractionated light to target deeper layers of skin and improve the appearance of scars, including acne scars and stretch marks. Laser scar treatments using the Venus Viva work by sending fractionated light past the epidermis, or outer layers of skin, to penetrate the deeper layers of skin, known as the dermis. Focusing thermal energy in the dermis generates heat which initiates skin change by rebuilding collagen and fibroblast stimulation, resulting in tissue remodeling.³

Cosmetic lasers, and other types of phototherapy, such as blue light therapy, are increasingly popular treatments for acne. Laser skin treatments can destroy the bacteria that cause acne, trigger cellular renewal to get rid of the dead skin cells that commonly get trapped in pores and can even shrink the size of your pores, making them less visible, and harder to clog.
Additionally, laser skin treatments can help reduce the appearance of redness and acne scars that develop with severe breakouts or chronic cystic acne.

BLU-U® light therapy is another photo-therapy that can effectively treat acne and actinic keratosis. BLU-U® light therapy works by targeting the abnormal cells that cause actinic keratosis, a common pre-cancerous condition characterized by rough, scaly lesions caused by sun exposure. During the procedure, a topical photo sensitizer called Levulan® is applied to the skin and left for an incubation period. Levulan is made of aminolevulinic acid (ALA), a natural substance found in the body. After incubation, the Levulan is activated by exposure to the narrow-band blue light waves emitted by the BLU-U light source. After light activation, the treated area is washed and patients can return home. While every patient is different, most return to work within one to two days after the procedure.
The cost of laser skin treatments in Westchester at Park Avenue Medical Spa vary according to the type of laser treatment and the amount of laser treatments. During your free consultation with Dr. Tchelebi, you can discuss how much a photofacial or Venus Viva costs, and determine a treatment plan and payment plan that is within your budget.
The number of treatments vary by individual and the specific type of laser treatment being performed but typically 2 to 5 treatments at 2 to 4 week intervals will produce desired results.
Laser skin treatments are FDA approved and considered a noninvasive, gentle procedure with virtually no downtime. In most cases you will be able to return to work, apply makeup, and resume most of your activities right away.
The length of each procedure varies slightly between the different types of laser skin treatments, but typically a treatment to one area takes less than 30 minutes. Many patients are able to come in for a laser skin treatment during their lunch hour.
A photo facial is a term commonly used to describe laser skin treatments using BBL or IPL lasers. Photofacials use thermal energy to improve skin tone and texture, diminish the signs of aging, break up melanin that cause sun spots, freckles and other types of pigmented lesions, and reduces redness caused by broken capillaries and skin conditions such as rosacea and melasma.
Laser skin resurfacing typically refers to treatments that utilize fractionated light, such as the Venus Viva. Besides improving skin tone and texture, laser skin resurfacing using fractionated laser technology can stimulate tissue remodeling, offering a possible solution for how to get rid of stretch marks or diminish acne scarring.
Laser skin treatment results typically manifest quickly and last a relatively long time. Most patients notice an improvement in skin tone and radiance within a few days of their first treatment. Since laser skin treatments stimulate the body’s natural processes to improve the appearance of the skin and correct skin blemishes, the full effects of the treatment may take between 4 to 12 weeks to appear. These noticeable results are long lasting and can be enhanced with additional treatments.
