When it comes to the signs of aging, it is better to prevent rather than repair. This is why “prejuvenation” is a popular beauty trend among men and women in their 20’s and 30’s. The most popular cosmetic treatment among Millennials is Botox and Dermal Fillers. Demand for these cosmetic treatments has skyrocketed among younger adults since new research has shown that preventative Botox and preventative fillers can actually prevent wrinkles from developing.

Read on to learn more about preventing wrinkles with Botox and Fillers and how prejuvenation can maintain your youthful appearance and ward of the signs of aging.

What Is Botox?

Botox is a neuromodulator that blocks nerve signals within muscles. This is ideal for treating dynamic wrinkles caused by the repetitive contraction of underlying facial muscles. Botox causes the muscle to relax, softening fine lines and smoothing out wrinkles that form between the eyebrows, on the forehead, and around the eyes, such as crow’s feet.

What Are Soft Tissue Fillers?

Dermal fillers are volumizing substances that fill in wrinkles and plump up areas with age related volume loss. Dermal fillers are most effective on the fine lines and wrinkles that form on the lower half of the face such as nasolabial folds (laugh lines.)

Preventative Botox in Your 20’s and 30’s

In recent years, there has been a growing demand for Botox and Fillers from patients in their 20’s and 30’s. Some people argue that cosmetic injections in men and women who are younger than 35 years of age is unnecessary, considering most wrinkles do not become a cosmetic concern for most people before their 30s. But dermatologists posit that Botox and fillers are valuable treatments for preventative skincare, or “prejuvenation,” and getting Botox before wrinkle set in can prevent those wrinkles from forming.

What Is Prejuvenation?

According to the 2017 annual report “Millennials & Injectables Are Shaping the Future of Aesthetics” from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS,, prejuvenation is an emerging beauty trend popular among patients in their 20’s and 30’s. The AAFPRS posits that our prevalent “youth culture” is significantly altering the majority demographic of patients receiving facial injections. “The focus has shifted from correction to prevention,” explains AAFPRS “Even before the first signs of sagging, lines or volume loss, we are seeing patients adamant about stalling the aging process.” The strategy Millennial men and women are employing to preserve their youth is “rejuvenation or a hot new term that refers to when smart young women start non-invasive beauty treatments like Botox and chemical peels earlier in order to prevent aging—rather than correct it,” states AAFPRS.

And according to a recent publication by the scientific community, prejuvenation is not hype. Studies suggest preventative Botox and preventative fillers actually ward off the formation of dynamic wrinkles.

How Does Preventative Botox Prevent Wrinkles?

The Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery published one notable study validating the use of preventative Botox titled “Long-term effects of botulinum toxin type A (Botox) on facial lines: a comparison in identical twins.” The study evaluated the “presence of imprinted facial lines” (wrinkles that are present even when the forehead is relaxed) as well as crow’s feet “in identical twin sisters, one of whom had received Botulinum toxin type A (Botox) treatment in the forehead and glabellar (between the eyebrows) region regularly for 13 years and one of whom had not.”

The purpose of this study was to determine if Botox injections could actually prevent wrinkles from forming. When the study evaluated both twins, neither of which had current Botox injections, researchers found that “Imprinted forehead and glabellar lines were not evident in the regularly treated twin but were evident in the minimally treated twin.” In addition to fewer wrinkles on the brow and forehead, “Crow’s feet were less noticeable when the regularly treated twin smiled.” Adding further evidence that Botox prevented wrinkles from forming, the study pointed out that “untreated facial areas (eg, nasolabial folds) showed comparable aging in both twins.” These findings allowed the researchers to conclude, “long-term treatment with Botox can prevent the development of imprinted facial lines that are visible at rest. Botox treatment can also reduce crow’s feet.

Additional support for preventative Botox and the value of using dermal fillers in an active rejuvenation

According to the authors, Botox and fillers not only diminish the appearance of existing wrinkles but can prevent wrinkles from forming, making these treatments beneficial to young adults who are beginning to see the first signs of fine lines.

Regarding Botox and similar neuromodulators such as Dysport and Xeomin, the authors reason that since expression lines form from repeated muscle contractions, that diminishing “the action of the muscles of facial expression” or paralyzing the facial muscle below an emerging wrinkle so that muscle cannot contract will prevent dynamic wrinkles from forming.

The authors believe that “Initiating regular treatment with a neuromodulator in an individual’s 20s or 30s will have a dramatic effect on the appearance of the face as seen in the person’s 40s or 50s. There will be few, if any, lines of facial expression present.”

How Do Dermal Fillers Ward off the Signs of Aging?

Relating to dermal fillers, the authors explain that “Injection of soft tissue fillers below folds and in areas of volume loss on the face not only smoothes skin and improves facial contour, but some of the substances stimulate biological process that induces new connective tissue that lasts much longer than the injected filler. For example, injecting…Hyaluronic acid filler has been shown to stimulate collagen production…These findings support what we often see clinically – the more a filler has been used, the less often it is needed and perhaps over time, its use becomes not necessary at all.”

The authors conclude “The initiation of conservative and thoughtful use of neuromodulators, fillers, and noninvasive energy-based treatments, alone or in combination, will keep patients looking young and their skin looking healthier. So there really is rarely a time that is too early. Perhaps the better question is, ‘When is it too late?’”
