When you think of correcting baldness or thinning hair, images of noticeable hair plugs or obvious toupees may come to mind. However, hair loss treatments have come a long way over the years, and patients have various options that can be tailored to their unique condition. One of the most advanced approaches to hair restoration involves the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

What Is PRP?

PRP is platelet-rich plasma and is derived directly from the patient’s blood. The blood is removed using a thin hypodermic needle just before the treatment, and then it is processed through a centrifuge to separate the plasma. When injected into the skin or used during a microneedling treatment, PRP stimulates collagen production, capillary and adipocyte growth in the dermis, and cell renewal. This valuable substance has similar effects that produce natural and effective hair restoration results.

What Causes Hair Loss?

Individuals can begin losing their hair for a multitude of reasons, whether it is because of nutritional deficiencies, infection, alopecia, autoimmune diseases, or genetics. Hair loss due to androgenic alopecia occurs in 30 percent of men over the age of 30 and 50 percent of men over the age of 50 as well as postmenopausal women. Symptoms of this condition develop gradually as the hair follicles become thinner over time. Male and female pattern baldness is also common among older patients and is characterized by hair that gradually thins out in specific areas.

How Does PRP Restore Hair Growth?

prp hair restorationDuring PRP hair restoration, it is usually injected into areas of the scalp with reduced hair growth. The PRP contains essential growth factors that are known to prolong the anagen cycle of the hair, increase cell regeneration at the hair follicle, and thicken the hair. The hair cycle consists of anagen (two to five years), catagen (a few days to weeks), and telogen (three months). Targeting the point of growth that is longest can deliver outstanding results.

What Results Can I Expect?

PRP hair restoration is usually performed once a month for two to three months. Patients who schedule regular maintenance appointments typically report having fuller, thicker, and more youthful hair as long as they continue treatment. This approach is recommended for patients who are experiencing hair loss or those who underwent hair transplants and want to maintain their results.

Other Hair Restoration Options

PRP treatment may not be appropriate or desirable for some patients, but there are other hair restoration options. At Park Avenue Medical Spa, you can choose from the following alternatives:

  • Hair transplant: Hair transplants using the NeoGraft® follicle harvesting system is the latest in hair grafting technology. Healthy hair follicles are removed one-by-one from the back of the scalp and placed in areas with little to no hair growth. This procedure is well-tolerated and requires practically no downtime.
  • At-home laser treatment: Patients who just underwent a hair transplant or PRP procedure are advised to purchase a HairMax® laser comb to maintain their results. HairMax® stimulates hair follicles and helps preserve the effects of a previous treatment.
