A New Clinical Study Evaluates the Newest Applicator

What Is Coolsculpting?

CoolSculpting is a popular fat reduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to effectively reduce fat from notorious problem areas. Using a process known as cryolipolysis, CoolSculpting is able to freeze subcutaneous fat without harming surrounding skin or tissue. Freezing fat cells effectively destroys them and triggers the body’s natural metabolic processes. The destroyed fat cells are processed and excreted from the body as waste. This leads to a noticeable and natural-looking reduction in fat. This ability to reduce stubborn fat deposits that resist diet and exercise quickly distinguished CoolSculpting as a non-surgical alternative to liposuction.

Expanding Treatment Areas to Reduce More Stubborn Fat Deposits

When CoolSculpting was first made available to the US in 2010, treatment areas were limited to the abdomen and flanks, or love handles. However as CoolSculpting’s popularity surged, so did the demand for new applicators that could reduce fat from other notorious problem areas of the body. Zeltiq, the makers of CoolSculpting responded with several new applicators of various sizes and shapes, designed to effectively reduce fat from the inner and outer thighs, chest, and back, and even reduce fat from a double chin.

CoolSculpting Announces New Applicator for Upper Arm Fat

The upper arm area is notorious for collecting stubborn fat deposits, especially among women. Aging exacerbates the problem. “Women tend to collect fat in the upper arms” explains Dr. Anca Tchelebi, the leading CoolSculpting Westchester provider. In 2017, Zeltiq, the maker of CoolSculpting announced a solution for women who struggle with upper arm fat, the CoolCup applicator. The newest applicator is specifically designed to contour to the upper arm.

Fat deposits that cling to the upper arms typically resist diet and exercise. This makes it very hard for women who want to get rid of upper arm fat. That is why “so many of my female patients who struggle with upper arm fat are so excited about the announcement of the CoolCup applicator,” explains Dr. Tchelebi.

Does CoolSculpting Upper Arm Fat Work? Clinical Findings Weight In

To evaluate the safety and efficacy of Zeltiq’s CoolCup applicator, scientists performed a study titled “Cryolipolysis for Reduction of Arm Fat: Safety and Efficacy of a Prototype CoolCup Applicator With Flat Contour” published in Dermatologic Surgery in July of 2017.

The authors of the study explain the design of the newest applicator “produced a uniform cooling profile because the entire surface area of the treated arm was in contact with the contoured cooling cup.”

Twelve weeks after a single CoolSculpting treatment, participants of the study were evaluated to measure their CoolSculpting results. Ultrasound was used to precisely measure the reduction in upper arm fat. The study reported that, on average, upper arm fat was reduced by 3.2mm, a “statistically significant reduction.” The study also noted that 85% of participants had visible reductions in upper arm fat that were clearly detected in their CoolSculpting before and after pictures.
