5 Common Misconceptions About Chemical Peels

Over time, sun damage, aging, acne scars, and other factors can begin to make your skin look dull and rough. While at-home exfoliating treatments can help remedy these concerns, there may come a time when you decide that a cosmetic procedure may be more beneficial. Chemical peels involve the application of acidic solutions to the skin to exfoliate, brighten, and smooth the skin. However, many people are unsure about undergoing a chemical peel treatment because they may believe that:

1. Chemical Peels Are Painful

Chemical peels are not typically painful. We may apply a topical anesthetic prior to an intermediate or deep peel. Patients usually report a tingling sensation, but no pain. The chemical solution that is applied to your skin will be neutralized, and the tingling will fade.

2. Chemical Peels Are Not Ideal for Patients With Dark Complexions

While there are certain types of chemical peels that should not be performed on dark skin, a light peel, such as a glycolic acid peel, may be a good option. Glycolic acid peels provide light exfoliation, hydrate the skin, and can soften fine lines and wrinkles. Other light peels that may work include lactic and salicylic acid peels. 3. There Is a Lengthy and Uncomfortable Recovery Period

After a superficial peel, you should be able to return to your regular activities. After a medium peel, there is a recovery period, but it should not be too uncomfortable or too long. After a deep peel, you may experience skin redness and crusting. These side effects can last for two weeks, depending on many factors, including your body’s healing ability.

4. Chemical Peels Are Only for Patients With Severe Skin Conditions

Chemical peels can work for many skin conditions. The type of peel chosen will depend on factors like the concerns being addressed and your skin tone. Superficial chemical peels are perfect for patients who do not have a severe skin condition but still want to smooth and brighten their complexion.

5. Only Older Patients Can Have a Chemical Peel

Patients of almost any age can undergo a chemical peel. If you have concerns such as scarring, acne, fine lines, discoloration, or even deep wrinkles, there may be a chemical peel that works for you. The strength of peel that is appropriate for you will be determined during your consultation.
