Prepping for Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment

You’ve made the decision to get laser hair removal treatments, that’s great! Congratulations! No more impromptu weekend getaways or beach days to shy away from just because you forgot (or didn’t have time) to shave! It seems like a pretty normal, simple service, but there are things to consider and keep in mind before undergoing your laser hair removal treatment. By following these pre-treatment instructions, you will be setting yourself up for success and smooth, hair-free skin!

No Waxing or Plucking!

Patients should not wax or pluck any hair at least four weeks before their treatment. When doing this, it removes the hair from the root (follicle) entirely, and it does not allow the laser to work. If this happens, your appointment will be rescheduled for at least six weeks out to ensure that the hair has grown back completely.

It seems kind of funny, but patients are required to shave 24 hours before their laser hair removal treatment session. The laser can still work because when you shave, it just takes off the top layer of the hair rather than removing the entire follicle. When shaving, remember to use a brand new razor to eliminate any chance of bacteria spreading.

No Tanning or Intense Sun Exposure

Any type of sun exposure should be avoided for at least two weeks prior to your laser hair removal session. Yes, this means no tanning beds, no laying out in the actual sun, no spray tan, and no sunless tanning creams. As always, using a broad-spectrum mineral sunblock with an SPF of 30 or above is recommended for daily use, rain or shine! Leaving the skin natural before your laser hair removal treatment offers the best results.

Use Soap & Water Only to Wash Your Body

Using soap on water only on areas that will be treated with the laser is crucial. Removing all makeup, lotions, creams, deodorants, and fragrances from your skin allows your skin to be treated fully, and it lessens the chance of having an allergic reaction while getting your treatment done. Fresh skin is the best skin!

Always follow the instructions of your skin care provider before, during, and after any service received at Park Avenue Medical Spa. Your results will be well worth it!
